Clay Pigeon Candles

Take a close look at the picture, can you tell what they are made of?  The base of the candles are Clay Pigeons.  If you are not familiar with 'Clay Pigeons' they are also known 'Clay Targets'.  They are round disc that are launched for flying targets for shooting (target practice). I have also known them to be called Skeet Shooting.  These targets are sold in sporting good departments such as Wal-Mart and KMart.  They are roughly $10 for 90 targets.

A few years ago my Mom and a friend made these candle holders - they were a hit!  Beautiful - Cheap - and Easy!  What more could you ask for?

• Place the small sides of the targets together - forming an hour glass shape.  Glue the two small sides with a hot glue gun. (Makes the Small Size holder)
• To make the Medium holder, glue two hour glass sets of targets together on the large outer flat rim of the target.  Glue three hour glass sets together for the large holder.
• Spray Paint the targets, let dry.
• With an old toothbrush - splatter paint with a contrasting color.  This gives it a speckle effect.
• You can accent the holders with raffia or ribbon.
• Place a pillar candle on the holder and you are done.

For a set of 3 holders - you will need 12 clay targets and 3 pillar candles.  You have plenty of time to keep a watch out for candles at the thrift stores!
